According to Igor Korotchenko, military analyst and editor-in-chief of National Defense magazine, formally, the demilitarized zone remains Ukrainian territory, but Russian armed forces will be present there, or there will be military raids.

`The main goal and task related to the demilitarized zone is to prevent shelling of Russian cities and towns and ensure the safety of Russian civilians. This is the meaning of this zone,`

On June 13, President Vladimir Putin met with war correspondents reporting on Russia’s special military campaign in Ukraine.

`The risk of shelling from Ukraine into our territory remains. I am considering creating a demilitarized zone on Ukrainian territory at such a distance that it is impossible to reach our territory,`

Vice Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev said that Russia could establish a demilitarized zone in Ukraine to avoid cross-border raids on Russian regions.

`Considering that our opponent decided to supply long-range weapons to Ukraine, this demilitarized zone should pass through the Lviv region, so that it can play a defensive role,` Mr. Medvedev wrote on Telegram on April 14.

Russian President Spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said that Moscow needs to push back the military infrastructure of the Ukrainian armed forces to ensure the security of Russian regions.

`The shelling and bombing of civilian infrastructure and civilian housing (of Russia) were carried out from the territory controlled by the Ukrainian government. When the Kiev government acquired sophisticated weapons

Russia accuses Ukraine of continuing to carry out attacks on territories it annexed last year, including Donetsk, Lugansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson.

`The important thing for us when creating a demilitarized zone is to ensure national interests, to ensure that Russian cities, towns and citizens are not attacked by the Armed Forces of Ukraine,` expert Korotchenko said.

According to expert Korotchenko, the best solution is to create a demilitarized zone along the Dnieper River and before establishing a demilitarized zone, Russia should solve a number of main tasks.

`The first task is to successfully repel the counterattack of the Ukrainian armed forces that they have started. The second task is to regain complete control of the territories that Ukraine is partially controlling,`
