Lemonde newspaper reported that NATO Secretary General Stoltenberg announced on Twitter on June 7 that he would chair an emergency meeting on the Kakhovka dam collapse in Ukraine.

Mr. Kuleba said that the meeting was held at his request and Secretary General Stoltenberg pledged to use the NATO mechanism to provide humanitarian aid to Ukraine.

A NATO spokesman said that there are currently no detailed information about the meeting, including the exact meeting time.

On the morning of June 6, the Kakhovka hydroelectric dam on the Dnieper River, in the Kherson province of Ukraine, suddenly broke, causing serious flooding in residential areas downstream.

According to data from emergency rescue agencies, about 2,700 houses in 15 settlements in Kherson province were flooded.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said its experts were `closely monitoring the situation` at the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant in neighboring Zaporizhia province following the dam collapse.

Russia and Ukraine blame each other for destroying the dam.

Russia has controlled Kherson since last year, not long after launching a military campaign in Ukraine.

Moscow and Kiev have proposed opening an international investigation to prosecute the Kakhovka dam collapse.

`Our military and intelligence agencies are currently reviewing the situation, so it is too early to assess and make accurate judgments,` British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said on June 6.

Along with promoting the investigation, Western allies and partners also pledged aid to help Ukraine overcome the consequences of the dam failure.
